Vital Design Celebrates Completion of Memorial Bridge Project

memorial-bridge-opening-ceremony

The wait is over: the new Memorial Bridge officially opens to traffic today. Vital Design is proud to have contributed to this historic event from the very  beginning, when we launched a website for the Memorial Bridge Project, allowing the Maine and NH DOTs to share updates about the progress of the new bridge. Our involvement came full circle when we designed the logo for the Bridging the Piscataqua exhibit at the Discover Portsmouth Center.

The exhibit shares the story of this monumental project and of all the bridges that have spanned the Piscataqua throughout Portsmouth’s history. These stories are told through paintings, photographs, and videos of the construction, operation and demolition of these bridges. The logo Vital Design created depicts the Memorial Bridge, spanning the Piscataqua River and joining the communities of Portsmouth and Kittery. The green section depicts the old bridge, while the blue shows the new bridge: representing the past and future of the Memorial Bridge.

Bridging the Piscataqua

The new Memorial Bridge represents a blend of cutting edge design and innovative engineering. It introduces cold bending of steel to bridge construction, a submarine building technique pioneered by the U.S. Navy. The design echoes the original bridge while looking forward to the future of the communities it links. Bridging the Piscataqua is open daily at the Discover Portsmouth Center (10 Middle St.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through October 13.

The Memorial Bridge opened to pedestrian and vehicle traffic today, and we’re thrilled to congratulate the cities of Portsmouth and Kittery, the New Hampshire and Maine DOTs, the team from Archer Western, and everyone else involved on the completion of this monumental project. Cheers!
