Semester at Sea: Driving Enrollment Through Strategic SEO & Content
Scope
Overview
Semester at Sea faced a shifting digital landscape, one where traditional search engine strategies were no longer enough to drive enrollment growth. Partnering with Vital across both paid advertising and organic channels, the team set out to redefine their digital strategy and capture high-intent prospective students at every stage of the funnel. The result: record-breaking application volumes and a measurable lift in qualified leads.

About Semester at Sea
Semester at Sea is a well-established study abroad program with nearly a century of history behind it. It all started in 1926, when Professor James Edwin Lough envisioned a floating university that would take learning beyond the classroom and into the world. Today, in partnership with Colorado State University, that vision is still very much alive, offering students the opportunity to visit 10+ countries, earn a full semester’s worth of college credit, and experience the comfort of a close-knit shipboard community unlike any other.
Semester at Sea’s primary audience is college students seeking a transformative semester abroad. With voyages designed to accommodate a full academic course load, the program appeals to motivated students who want meaningful global experience without sacrificing academic progress, all while gaining the kind of cultural perspective that simply can’t be taught in a traditional classroom.
The Challenge
Semester at Sea came to Vital with a clear goal of growing enrollment but several interconnected challenges were standing in the way:
Shifting search behavior
AI Overviews (AIOs), zero-click search behavior, and a decline in branded search created new obstacles for organic visibility, which made it harder to reach prospective voyagers through traditional SEO strategies.
Low conversion rates
While influencer marketing brought in more application starts, those leads didn’t convert. Fewer applicants went on to submit, get accepted, or pay a deposit.
Enrollment barriers
Program cost and credit transferability created friction at the bottom of the funnel, even among students who were genuinely interested.
Content gaps
Existing blog content drove general traffic but wasn’t structured to capture high-intent, application-ready students, which left qualified prospects without the information they needed to take the next step.
Long sales cycle
The complexity of the enrollment process required content that could nurture leads over months, not days.
Our Solution
Instead of chasing traffic volume, we worked on building a content ecosystem that attracts, nurtures, and converts the right students.
Here’s how we did it:
Expanding non-branded organic visibility
We centered our SEO strategy around discovery-stage searches (“study abroad programs,” “best places to study abroad,” “gap year,” and major-specific topics) to reach high-intent students unfamiliar with Semester at Sea. This expanded the brand’s keyword footprint and topical authority.
Optimizing for AI-driven search
With AIOs and zero-click behavior reshaping online discovery, we optimized for featured snippets, FAQ-rich results, and AIO visibility, and standardized key takeaways across blog content to strengthen LLM performance and future-proof the strategy.
Voyage guide content
These digital brochure-style guides give prospective students a preview of life aboard and have become a top early-stage lead driver. They averaged 238 new leads/month (April 2025–April 2026), peaking at 792 leads in September, a 662% YoY increase in early-stage leads.
Major-specific blog content
Targeted blog content for fields like nursing and engineering speak directly to students with a clear academic fit, driving qualified traffic beyond general awareness.
Conversion rate optimization (CRO)
Traffic alone wasn’t enough, so we optimized conversion across the funnel:
- Introduced new cost calculator pathways via overlays on high-traffic pages, driving a 34% YoY increase in sales-ready leads from the calculator (12.7k → 17k submissions)
- Replaced a long single-page form with a multi-step form (July 2025), driving an 18% YoY increase in sales-ready lead submissions (21.9k → 25.8k)
- Added overlay and landing page testing to improve lead capture and UX
Application funnel optimization
To reduce friction at the final step, we eliminated the $75 application fee and ran a fee waiver promotion (Dec 31–Jan 2), which boosted submitted applications.
Influencer impact tracking
Using Google Search Console data, we linked influencer activity (including high-profile TikTok creators) to branded search spikes, turning awareness campaigns into a measurable part of the strategy.
